Plasmonics: a versatile toolbox for heterogeneous photocatalysis

Plasmonic photocatalysis is a dynamic field of research devoted to the activation chemical transformations thanks unique optoelectronic features plasmonic nanomaterials such as their high electromagnetic enhancements or ability generate non-thermalized charge carriers and localized temperature gradients. Importantly, use these objects photocatalysts can lead new reactivities when compared with classical heterogeneous photocatalysts, including an unprecedented control over efficiency selectivity within broader range solar spectrum. In present study we summarize most important aspects that need be taken into consideration designing photocatalytic system. Representative examples from literature toward rational design photocatalyst are provided, together comprehensive list organic inorganic have been successfully modulated by plasmons. We also discuss importance single nanoparticle measurements means characterize systems, allowing better insight object heterogeneities structure-function relationships usually lost in ensemble characterization techniques. Finally, highlight major role played reaction intermediates performing photoredox processes solution, particularly driving photochemical reactions biological environments.
